Pour célébrer le 50e anniversaire d'ABBA en 2022, je partage l'histoire d'ABBA à travers leurs chansons.

Bien que la musique d'ABBA ait commencé il y a 50 ans, il faut remonter bien plus loin pour commencer cette histoire.

Plus précisément, le 25 janvier 1931, à Hova (Suède), jour de la naissance de Stig Erik Leopold Andersson, ancien manager d'ABBA et propriétaire de la maison de disques Polar Music.

Stig a commencé par écrire ses propres chansons et a même sorti un single où il chantait sa propre voix, mais il a rapidement commencé à acheter les droits de tubes internationaux et à les traduire en suédois pour les sortir dans son pays.

C'est pourquoi il a créé Polar Music avec son ami Bengt Bernard.

Ensemble, ils ont produit plus de 3 000 chansons, ce qui a rapidement fait croître Polar Music.

Björn Ulvaeus

Björn Kristian Ulvaeus est né le 25 avril 1945 à Göteborg (Suède).

À l'âge de treize ans, il reçoit une guitare et commence à jouer de la musique avec un groupe de son école appelé les West Bay Singers.

En 1963, leur mère les inscrit à un concours radiophonique où Bengt Bernard les découvre et les présente avec plaisir à Stig.

Stig et Bengt venaient de créer Polar Music et cherchaient des artistes à signer, et Björn et son groupe furent donc les premiers membres de Polar Music.

Stig a changé le nom du groupe en Hootenanny Singers et leur a demandé de chanter uniquement en suédois.

C'est ainsi que naît le premier single du groupe en 1964 : « Jag Väntar Vid Min Mila », même si le premier succès viendra avec le huitième single de la même année de Stig :
« Gabrielle ».

Björn avait déjà commencé à écrire pour son groupe et la première chanson qu'il a écrite pour eux était « Darlin' ».

Cette année-là, sortent également les deux premiers albums du groupe intitulés

“Hootenanny Singers” et “Hootenanny Singers Second LP”.

Benny Andersson

Benny Bror Göran Andersson est né le 16 décembre à Stockholm. Fils d'une famille de musiciens, il commence très tôt à jouer de plusieurs instruments et à quinze ans, il joue déjà dans des clubs et rencontre sa première partenaire, Christina Gronvall, avec qui il aura bientôt son premier fils, Peter.

L'année suivante, après avoir passé quelques mois avec sa femme dans le groupe « Elverkets Spelmanslag », Benny fonde le groupe Hep Stars et remplace quelques mois plus tard leur claviériste.

Le groupe venait de sortir son premier single, « A Tribute To Buddy Holly », en juin 1964, et allait connaître son premier grand succès avec « Cadillac » en mars 1965.

Ils n'enregistrèrent que des reprises de tubes américains jusqu'à l'arrivée de Benny qui écrivit pour eux des chansons comme « Sunny Girl » et « Wedding », qui deviendront également des tubes et que Benny promouvra en tant que leader du groupe avec Svenne Hedlund comme créateur.

Pour continuer avec les Hep Stars, Benny abandonnera sa femme et ses deux enfants, qui seront laissés aux soins de sa mère.

Le 6 juin 1966, The Hep Stars et The Hootenanny Singers se rencontrent à Linköping et Björn et Benny, qui ne se connaissaient que par notoriété, découvrent la même image de musiciens et composent le même jour ce qui est leur première composition en duo :
« Isn't It Easy To Say ». Ce titre sera enregistré par les Hep Stars.

Bientôt, les deux collaboreront occasionnellement, tout en restant dans leurs groupes respectifs.

En 1969, avec l'aide de Stig, ils ont eu leur premier succès avec « Ljuva Sextital », qu'ils ont écrit pour Brita Borg.

Agnetha Fältskog

Agneta Åse Fältskog est née le 5 avril 1950 à Jonkoping (Suède).

À l'âge de quinze ans, elle rejoint l'orchestre de danse Bengt Enghart Orkestra. Après deux ans avec le groupe, leur manager Bengt Enghart envoie une démo au label Cupol où Karl Gerhard Lundkvist s'intéresse, mais seulement à Agnetha, elle est donc la seule à signer un contrat avec le label et à enregistrer son premier single « Jag Var Så Kär », une composition de la jeune femme écrite après sa première rupture amoureuse. Cette chanson la mènera à la troisième place du Svensktoppen.

En 1968, Agnetha sort son premier album et s'engage avec le producteur et auteur-compositeur allemand Dieter Zimmermann, qui lui promet une belle carrière dans son pays. Après plusieurs singles allemands infructueux, ce pays a perdu patience avec Agnetha et son histoire d'amour, et elle est retournée seule en Suède.

En mai 1969, la télévision suédoise invite Agnetha à participer à l'émission « Räkna De Lyckliga Stunderna Blott » sur Jules Sylvain, compositeur, scénariste et musicien suédois. Quand Agnetha a découvert que Björn Ulvaeus était également dans le casting, elle était très heureuse, car elle l'avait déjà rencontré plusieurs fois dans les parcs folkloriques, et lui avait même demandé son dernier single, "Raring", car elle l'aimait vraiment. C'est dans ce contexte qu'un amour est né entre eux lors du tournage de l'émission.

Anni-Frid Lyngstad

Anni-Frid Lyngstad est née à Ballangen, en Norvège, le 15 novembre 1945, d'une mère norvégienne et d'un sergent allemand marié. La famille déménage en Suède, mais la mère de Frida meurt de maladie en 1947 et c'est finalement sa grand-mère qui prend soin de Frida dans la ville de Torshälla.

En 1958, Frida rejoint l'Evald Ek Orkesta et en 1963 elle est la chanteuse du Gunnar Sandervarn Trio avant de former son propre groupe : The Anni-Frid Four. Dans les deux cas avec Ragnar Fredriksson, son premier mari et père de ses deux enfants nés en 1963 et 1967.

En 1967, il remporte un concours national avec la chanson « En Ledig Dag » et en guise de prix, il doit présenter la chanson à la télévision le même jour.

EMI, le producteur de l'émission de télévision, lui a proposé un contrat et avec eux, Frida a enregistré plusieurs singles qui n'ont pas eu le succès qu'elle recherchait.

En 1969, elle participe au Melodifestivalen (concours qui sélectionne la chanson qui représentera la Suède au Concours Eurovision de la Chanson) avec "Härlig Är Vår Jord" et c'est là qu'elle rencontre Benny Andersson qui est accompagné de Jan Malmsjö en tant qu'auteur de la chanson "Hej Clown" qu'elle présente également au concours.

Lorsqu'elle s'installe à Stockholm, elle laisse derrière elle son mari et ses deux enfants, confiés à la garde de leur père.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of ABBA's music in 2022, I'm going to tell you the story of ABBA through its songs.

Although ABBA's music began 50 years ago, we have to go back much further to begin this story.

Specifically, to January 25, 1931, in Hova, Sweden, the day Stig Erik Leopold Andersson, the former manager of ABBA and owner of the record label Polar Music, was born.

Stig started by writing his own songs and even released a single featuring his own vocals, but he quickly began buying the rights to international hits and translating them into Swedish for release in his own country.

Björn Ulvaeus

Björn Kristian Ulvaeus was born on April 25, 1945, in Gothenburg, Sweden.

At the age of thirteen, he received a guitar and began playing music with a school group called the West Bay Singers.

In 1963, his mother entered them into a radio competition, where Bengt Bernard discovered them and, delighted, introduced them to Stig.

Stig and Bengt had just founded Polar Music and were looking for artists to sign, and so Björn and his group became the first members of Polar Music.

Stig changed the group's name to the Hootenanny Singers and asked them to sing only in Swedish.

Thus was born the group's first single in 1964: "Jag Väntar Vid Min Mila," although their first hit came with Stig's eighth single of the same year: "Gabrielle."

Björn had already started writing for his band, and the first song he wrote for them was "Darlin'."

The band's first two albums, titled "Darlin'," were also released that year.

Benny Andersson

Benny Bror Göran Andersson was born on December 16 in Stockholm. Born into a musical family, he began playing several instruments at an early age. By the age of fifteen, he was playing in clubs and meeting his first partner, Christina Gronvall, with whom he soon had his first son, Peter.

The following year, after spending a few months with his wife in the band "Elverkets Spelmanslag," Benny founded the group Hep Stars and, a few months later, replaced their keyboardist.

The group had just released their first single, “A Tribute To Buddy Holly,” in June 1964, and would have their first big hit with “Cadillac” in March 1965.

They only recorded covers of American hits until Benny arrived and wrote songs like “Sunny Girl” and “Wedding” for them, which would also be hits and which Benny would promote as the leader of the band with Svenne Hedlund as its creator.

To continue with the Hep Stars, Benny will abandon his wife and two children, who will be left in the care of his mother.

On June 6, 1966, the Hep Stars and the Hootenanny Singers met in Linköping. Björn and Benny, who were only known by their stage name, discovered a shared image as musicians. That same day, they composed what was their first song as a duo: "Isn't It Easy To Say." This song would be recorded by the Hep Stars.

Soon, the two would collaborate occasionally while remaining in their respective groups.

In 1969, with the help of Stig, they had their first hit with "Ljuva Sextital," which they wrote for Brita Borg.

Agneta Åse Fältskog was born on April 5, 1950, in Jonkoping, Sweden.

At the age of fifteen, she joined the Bengt Enghart Orkestra dance orchestra. After two years with the band, her manager, Bengt Enghart, sent a demo to Cupol Records, where Karl Gerhard Lundkvist was interested, but only in Agneta. So, she signed a contract with the label and recorded her first single, "Jag Var Så Kär," a composition written by the young woman after her first breakup. The song took her to number three on the Svensktoppen.

In 1968, Agnetha released her first album and became involved with German producer and songwriter Dieter Zimmermann, who promised her a successful career in his home country. After several unsuccessful German singles, that country finally ran out of patience with Agnetha and her romance, and she returned to Sweden alone.

In May 1969, Swedish television invited Agnetha to participate in the program "Räkna De Lyckliga Stunderna Blott" about Jules Sylvain, a Swedish composer, screenwriter, and musician. When Agnetha discovered that Björn Ulvaeus was also on the cast, she was delighted, having met him several times in the folk parks and even requested his latest single, "Raring," because she liked it so much. Against this backdrop, love blossomed between them during the filming of the program.

Anni-Frid Lyngstad

Anni-Frid Lyngstad was born in Ballangen, Norway, on November 15, 1945, to a Norwegian mother and a married German sergeant. The family moved to Sweden, but Frida's mother died of illness in 1947, and it was ultimately her grandmother who took care of Frida in the town of Torshälla.

In 1958, Frida joined the Evald Ek Orkesta and in 1963 she was the vocalist for the Gunnar Sandervarn Trio before forming her own band, The Anni-Frid Four. Both were with Ragnar Fredriksson, her first husband and the father of her two children, born in 1963 and 1967.

In 1967, he won a national competition with the song “En Ledig Dag” and as a prize, he had to present the song on television that same day.

When she moved to Stockholm, she left behind her husband and two children, who were left in the care of their father.
